Near Boxford Primary School high voltage electricity lines run from the main line to a transformer. Last year many of the boys and girls witnessed the agonising death of a swan which flew into the wires in the adjoining meadow and were naturally distressed.

This year, being Nature Conservation Year, the children have been encouraged to watch from their schoolroom window the many birds of different species frequenting the field through which the river flows, and special interest was taken in a pair of herons which, it was hoped, would be mating in the spring.

Boxford. An artist's impression of the new sports pavilion proposed for the village.

The sum of £1,000 must be raised over the next 18 months if the project is to get off the ground.

Members of the Boxford Youth Club have already started the ball rolling. Their recent table tennis marathon raised £136 towards the pavilion funds. The project is being promoted by the Boxford Community Council.

Expenditure by St. Mary's Church, Boxford, was heavy last year and the situation gave rise to some anxiety, said the treasurer, Mr. Percy Fletcher, in his report to the annual meeting of the church council.

Mr. Fletcher, who resigned his post, said that income from Sunday collections was greater than last year, although one might have expected that the freewill offering scheme organised by Mr. Gordon Lamb, which brought in £155, would have resulted in some reduction.

We British are not a boastful race, in fact we tend generally to be self-denigratory, but there is one skill we all proudly claim - we all think we are first-class drivers of a motor car.

But, are we? Is our standard of driving all that it might be?

Boxford people are being given the opportunity of finding out for themselves whether they really know all the answers. An Advanced Driving Course, conducted by Police officers (all holders of the 1st class Police Driving Certificates) starts at Boxford Primary School on Monday, February 9, at 7.30 p.m.

The finances of a village hall may not present such problems as the Balance of Payments or the general economic situation, but, believe me, to make such a hall pay its way out of what it earns is a heck of a job. Put your prices up sufficiently to cover your running expenses and down go your hirings; put them down and you add to your debit balance.

The answer? Whist drives, socials, and most important of all - jumble sales - that's the only way to make the books balance.

A table tennis marathon recently run by members of Boxford Youth Club raised £136 and gave a flying start to a fund started in the village to provide sports facilities.

The target is £1,000 in 18 months. And any doubt that Boxford people are interested in the provision of recreational facilities was dispelled when more than 120 people attended a buffet supper in the Village Hall on Saturday.

The supper was organised by the Boxford Community Council in order to launch the appeal for money to help pay for the building of a pavilion on the Croft Recreational Ground.

The chairman of the community council, Mr. Ralph Tugman, explained that the aim of the 'get-together' was to keep the village informed of what the council had done, was doing and hoped to do.

At a special meeting of the Boxford Village Hall Committee held on Monday, it was announced that the caretaker of the hall - Mrs. Crighton - had been obliged to resign owing to illness. The committee received this information with great regret and tributes were paid to the keen and conscientious manner in which she had carried out the work.

The chairman, Mr. J. Parr, reported that he had approached Mr. Reg Fletcher who, with his wife, had shared the duties of caretaker for many years previous to the appointment of Mrs. Crichton, and he had kindly consented to come out of retirement and take on the job again. This news was most welcome and the chairman was asked to make the necessary arrangements. The committee also expressed their thanks to Mrs. Pat Williams, the hon. secretary, who, with the help of Mr. and Mrs. Flood, kept things going during Mrs. Crichton's illness.
